Description

Independence Day is observed on July 4th in the United States.

This national and federal holiday commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the American founding fathers.

Historical Background
On July 4th, the Second Continental Congress of the thirteen British colonies in America came together to formally approve the Declaration of Independence, which asserted their sovereignty from British rule. Although the document had been unanimously approved on July 2, it was officially adopted on July 4, 1776. The final version was primarily signed on August 2 of the same year.

Notable Independence Day Celebrations
In 1777, early Independence Day celebrations included gun salutes and festive dinners in Bristol, Rhode Island, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. General George Washington marked the occasion with extra rations of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Meanwhile, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin hosted an American dinner in Paris, France.

Over the years, various states recognized Independence Day as a state celebration, and the holiday became officially known as “Independence Day” in 1791. In 1870, Congress made it an unpaid holiday for federal employees, and in 1938, it was made a paid holiday for them.

Celebrations
Independence Day is a patriotic holiday filled with parades during the day, where people proudly display the colors of the American flag – red, white, and blue. These parades usually take place in the morning, while fireworks displays, organized by professionals and even amateurs (with certain restrictions), light up the night sky.

Concerts are often held, featuring performances of patriotic songs such as “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America,” “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee,” “America the Beautiful,” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.” In some regions, additional songs like “Yankee Doodle” in northern states and “Dixie” in the south may be included in the festivities. The day is an opportunity for Americans to express their national pride and celebrate the spirit of freedom and independence.
