Description

Christmas is observed annually on December 25th.

Christmas is both a religious and cultural holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is widely associated with family gatherings, gift-giving, and festive meals.

Origins
Despite its Christian significance, Christmas has roots in pagan traditions, including the Roman feast of Saturnalia and the birthday celebrations of Mithra, along with winter solstice festivities.

The earliest recorded celebration of the birth of Christ was in Rome in 354 AD, while in the East, it was traditionally observed on January 6. During the American Revolution, Christmas fell out of favor due to its association with British customs and disapproval by Puritans. However, in the mid-19th century, it experienced a resurgence in popularity, largely influenced by Charles Dickens’ novel “A Christmas Carol.”

Celebration
Although Christmas Day falls on December 25, the celebrations begin shortly after Thanksgiving. The period leading up to Christmas involves various traditions such as caroling, attending church services, decorating homes, and exchanging gifts. Families typically gather for special feasts on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, while friends and coworkers often celebrate in the weeks leading up to December 25. Festive decorations often include images of Santa Claus, wreaths, twinkling lights, and Christmas trees.

Christmas customs vary across the world, but in American homes, vibrant multicolored lights are often used to adorn Christmas trees, which symbolize eternal life even in the midst of winter. Wrapped gifts are placed under the tree to be unwrapped on Christmas Day. The holiday season, spanning from Thanksgiving to Christmas Day, witnesses heightened economic activity, making it a crucial time for retailers, though some argue that Christmas places economic burdens on individuals.

On Christmas Day, almost all businesses, including retail stores and restaurants, close their doors to observe the holiday. Schools and universities typically have extended vacations during this time, allowing students to enjoy the festive season with their families.

Santa Claus, a legendary figure, plays a significant role in Christmas celebrations. Parents tell children that Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, comes down the chimney during the night of Christmas Eve to deliver gifts to well-behaved children. Those who misbehave may receive a lump of coal instead of gifts.

Economically, Christmas is a vital time for retailers, with a significant increase in consumer spending. Department stores, bookstores, and jewelry stores experience a surge in sales between November and December, and Christmas cards and Christmas tree sales also heavily depend on the holiday season.
