Description

Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October.

Columbus Day is recognized as a federal holiday, although only 23 states provide their workers with a paid day off. It commemorates Christopher Columbus’s voyage and the discovery of the New World in 1492, despite evidence of previous Norse voyages and claims of other pre-Columbian discoveries.

The origin of Columbus Day dates back to Colorado in 1906, though celebrations of Columbus’s voyage have occurred since colonial times. It became a federal holiday in 1937, and in 1892, President Benjamin Harrison called for a celebration of the 300th anniversary of Columbus’s voyage, emphasizing patriotic ideals. The Italian-American community considers Columbus Day a celebration of Italian heritage.

Celebrations for Columbus Day vary significantly across the country. Some places hold grand parades to honor Christopher Columbus’s journey, like San Francisco, CA, which hosts the oldest continuously running Columbus Day parade, established in 1868. New York City boasts the largest Columbus Day parade, attracting thousands of marchers and spectators.

On Columbus Day, most school districts, state government offices, many businesses, banks, the bond market, the U.S. postal service, and other federal agencies observe the holiday with a day off.

However, Columbus Day has been the subject of controversy since at least the 19th century due to associations with immigrants and the Knights of Columbus, leading to concerns about its use to expand Catholic influence. In the mid-20th century, the focus shifted to critiques about the historical accuracy of Columbus’s “discovery” and criticisms of his mistreatment of indigenous populations. This includes examples of his enslavement of 1500 Arawak men, women, and children and the brutal treatment of natives who did not meet his demands for gold.

As a result of these criticisms, some cities have opted to rename Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, starting with Berkeley, California in 1992 and followed by other places like Sebastopol, Santa Cruz, Dane County, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, and Seattle.
