Description

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May.

It serves as a remembrance for all those who have lost their lives while serving in the American armed forces. Traditionally, Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of the summer season.

The exact origin of Memorial Day is unclear, but it is believed to have emerged around the end of the Civil War in 1868. Originally called Decoration Day, the tradition of placing flowers on soldiers’ graves is said to have started when Confederate women decorated the graves of Union soldiers with flowers, expressing their desire to honor the fallen soldiers.

One of the first widely recognized Memorial Day celebrations took place in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 1, 1865. However, the name “Memorial Day” wasn’t commonly used until after World War II, and it only became a federal law in 1967. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved Memorial Day to a Monday to create a three-day weekend.

The first Memorial Day celebration in Charleston was organized mostly by freed Black men who landscaped and cleaned the soldiers’ burial ground, and attendees brought flowers to honor the deceased. Despite this, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed Waterloo, New York, as the official birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966.

Other locations have also claimed to be the birthplace of the holiday, such as Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, Carbondale, Illinois, and Columbus, Georgia, among others. However, the tradition of Decoration Day was followed by the North as well, and on May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, declared a proclamation to observe Decoration Day nationwide.

Memorial Day is celebrated with parades, visits to cemeteries, and less formally, barbecues. The US flag is raised to the top of the pole in the morning and then lowered to half-mast as a solemn tribute to fallen soldiers. At noon, it is raised by living soldiers who pledge to continue fighting for liberty and justice in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Decoration Day is still celebrated in some cemeteries on Sundays in late spring or early summer, particularly in the southern United States, sometimes serving as family reunions.

Other long-standing traditions associated with Memorial Day include the Indianapolis 500, a NASCAR race held since 1911, and the Memorial Tournament in golf, which has taken place on or close to Memorial Day weekend since 1976.

In 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act, requesting people to pause and remember the sacrifices of soldiers at 3:00 PM.
