Description

New Year’s Day is observed on January 1st each year, immediately following New Year’s Eve on December 31.

It marks the beginning of the first month on both the standard Gregorian and Julian calendars, signifying the start of a new year. On this occasion, many people welcome the New Year with resolutions, making commitments to self-improvement.

Origins
The celebration of New Year’s is believed to have originated in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) as early as 2000 B.C. Initially, it was observed on the vernal equinox, around March 21st. However, since 45 B.C., when Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar, New Year’s has been celebrated on its current date, January 1st. The Julian calendar was later replaced by the Gregorian calendar in 1582 due to a calculation error, and this calendar is still used today. January 1st was chosen to coincide with the feast of the circumcision and naming of Jesus, as well as with the elections of consuls in the Roman Empire. Additionally, the tradition of the ball drop in Times Square, New York City, dates back to 1907, when a young immigrant metal worker named Jacob Starr created a ball out of wood and steel, adorned with one hundred 25-watt lights. Though the design has changed over time, the tradition of the ball drop remains the same.

Celebration
New Year’s Day is a public holiday in the United States, resulting in the closure of government offices, schools, and many businesses. New Year’s parties often include countdowns to midnight, with some people watching the ball drop in Times Square, New York City. At the stroke of midnight, champagne bottles are popped open, couples welcome the new year with a kiss, and New Year’s resolutions are finalized. Fireworks displays are common at midnight as well.

Other traditions involve events like the Polar Plunge in South Boston, where participants go swimming early in the morning on January 1st to raise money for charitable causes. Sporting events, such as college football bowl games and the NHL’s Winter Classic hockey game, have also become part of New Year’s Day celebrations in recent years. Additionally, some Christian denominations, like Orthodox Christians, the Anglican Church, and the Lutheran Church, continue to celebrate the feast of the circumcision and naming of Jesus on this day.
